Mandala Tribal and Sharon Moore is not trans friendly.
On the other hand, Skin Deep Dance Studio, which not only accepted me for class, but welcomed me with open arms and said I had come to the right place.
Here is the full post from my journal and the transgender community.
Thank you again to everyone who responded yesterday. I went from being crushed yesterday to being absolutely elated today!
No, I have not heard back from the first instructor, the one who rejected me. But I am rarely one to give up. My mother called it being stubborn in a good way. Being stubborn, I went looking for other instructors of American Tribal Style belly dance here in Seattle and I found a few and e-mailed the first one my list.
I am interested in joining one of your classes for beginning ATS belly dancing. I am a transgendered woman and I wish to contribute to the feminine space you and your students have worked to create. It is my desire to learn American Tribal Style Belly Dancing though I have already been turned away from one class despite identifying as a women.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
I figured I would not hear back from them until tomorrow and even then, I was bracing myself for another rejection.
Less than three hours later, I received a response...
Thank you for your message. We would be happy if you come to class.
Also, do you know about Kendra from Hands of Kali? http://handsofkali.com She teaches a regular transgender class. Although, she does not teach ATS. But she is awesome and a friend!
You've come to the right place.
Happy Holidays and I look forward to meeting you in the coming year!

Now I need to get some comfortable dance wear to wear to class. :)
